When you’re new to makeup, hearing the word “undertone” can be daunting. What the heck do you mean by undertone? Like.. why is it so important? Am I cool? Am I warm? Am I both somehow??? Am I neither?! WHAT DOES IT MEAN!??!!!
First of all, calm it down, sister. I’m here to help! I’m going to show you some simple ways to identify what your undertones are, and hopefully by the end of this you’ll have everything you need to know about that dang undertone!
So.. Why IS it important to find your undertone? Well- some people might argue that it helps you when picking your lip colors & eye shadows….I say this is PHOOEY! Wear what you want when it comes to these things. For these, undertone is merely a suggestion. You do you, boo. However, you’ll need to find your undertone in order to properly match your foundation shade if you don’t want to look washed-out (cool toned person wearing warm toned foundation) or ommpa-loompa-like (warm toned person wearing cool toned foundation).
A quick way to figure out your undertone is to look at your wrist. What color are your veins? If they’re blue or purple, you’re cool toned. If your wrists are green or olive, you’re warm toned. If you can’t tell or both colors are present, chances are you’re probably neutral.
Another way to tell is based on how your skin reacts with sun exposure. Do you burn, and never tan? You’re cool toned! Do you tan really easily? You’re warm! Do you tan, but sometimes also burn? Neutral!
Still a little unsure? Check out this helpful chart I made to give yourself a better idea!
Hopefully that made sense! Alright, well, I’m off for now!
Until next time!!
